Unexpected ways to Deal with Migraines

Migraines can cause huge disruptions in your day to day life, and range from unpleasant to debilitating. In addition to your regular treatment, it’s often helpful to consider more uncommon options as a way to ease your symptoms. We’ve rounded up some of the best tips to tackle your migraines, from the common advice given by the American Migraine Foundation, to lesser-known quick fixes some people swear by.

Maintain consistency

The AMF suggests that a consistent routine can help you avoid migraine triggers. This means regulating your sleep schedule, your diet, and your exercise regimen. Migraines tend to crop up when any of these foundational routines gets out of whack, so settling into a rhythm with minimal diversions can really help you see improvement in the frequency, severity, and durations of your migraines.

Limit the Light

A lot of people with migraines report photosensitivity as either a trigger or a symptom, so it can be helpful to take some daily precautions. Wear sunglasses out and about, and don’t be afraid to pull them out indoors if you’re somewhere with harsh bright lights. You can opt for a lighter tinted shade to help you avoid any social judgement. Also consider getting a pair of blue light filtering glasses, and lower the brightness on all of your lighted devices.

Don’t Suffer Smells

While it can be intimidating to speak up and advocate for yourself, you deserve to live and work in environments that don’t cause you debilitating pain. Odors, for a lot of people, can be that cause. Educate your loved ones about your migraines and their specific triggers, and ask the people around you to help you create an odorless environment. The AMF even has a guide for advocating for yourself at work, which can be a huge step in limiting your exposure to potential triggers in your daily routine.

Take a Plunge

A less common approach to the migraine might seem a bit silly at first, but has been touted as a headache relief for many years. You’ll need to soak your feet in a hot bath, while also applying an ice pack to your forehead or neck. The idea behind this method is that the hot water will help to encourage blood flow to your feet, thereby relieving the pressure of the blood vessels in your head that may contribute to headaches and migraines.
